An introduction to coaching as a leadership and influence skill. In this introduction we learn more about the mindsets, skills and capabilities around coaching and its potential impact.
The difference between coaching and mentoring can be difficult to define. Some people argue that they are virtually the same thing, but the truth is – there are some important differences. In this module, we cover how teaching, mentoring and coaching differ and why advice giving isn’t (always) the answer to the challenges you and your team face.
Now that we’re clear on the difference between teaching, mentoring and coaching, we dive into some of the beliefs, mindsets, and emotional states that will help you be a more effective coach. Coaching isn’t just a skill-set, it’s a mindset as well.
The first skill required to be a more effective coach is deep active listening. Did you know we spend about 55% of our communication time devoted to listening and in a world of distraction most listeners get distracted 75% of the time. To create a space for effective coaching you need to move quickly from surface and conversational listening to deep active listening. In this module we cover the mindsets and skills of listening to practice and applying to your coaching approach.
Now that we’re aware of, and practicing our deep active listening skills we can jump into our second skill.
To become more coach-like you need to develop the ability to ask curious, thought provoking and powerful questions. In this module we cover the mindsets and emotional states to become more curious, cover tips to help you amplify your question asking, and elevate your coaching skills.
Context plays a very big part in the approach you choose to use with individuals or teams. Being able to identify which approach is the right one for a particular situation is an important skill. In this module we review the Situational Leadership model and how to leverage this simple but effective framework.
We’ve covered some of the critical mindsets and skills required to be a more effective leader and coach and in this module we dive into two coaching frameworks that will provide you with a map of how to engage in a coaching conversation with an individual, a team or even yourself.
This is where the rubber hits the road. We cover tips on how to practice these skills as individual components or as a full coaching conversation. This module also covers some of the speed bumps you might encounter when practicing this new approach with some options to get back on track if you get stuck.

Kelly, Manager Legal Firm
I’m a leadership and business coach whose proprietary coaching frameworks enable individual leaders and managers to develop greater clarity and confidence in their leadership approach and achieve their professional goals.
My work draws on more than 25 years’ experience in senior leadership in digital, technical and marketing roles, as well as the start-up and growth of two successful businesses. I now coach leaders and businesses on how to become more purposeful and human-centred in their approach whilst scaling their businesses, delivering long-term results with a more engaged workforce.
When I began my leadership journey, I encountered the traditional “command and control” style of leadership that thrived in predictable environments. However, as the work landscape rapidly evolved, so did the challenges and obstacles people faced. Sadly, the development of our people leaders and managers has often lagged behind, clinging to outdated approaches. To maximise the potential of people and drive business growth, it’s crucial for managers to shift from a “boss-like” mentality and style to a more empowering and supportive “coach-like” approach.
“As a leader of a very experienced sales team who are specialists in their field, I was looking for ways to be a more effective coach to unlock more of their potential. The program provided me with some important reminders and some new insights and tools. I’ve been able to use the Situational Leadership model to have more purposeful conversations with each of my direct reports. I’ve also had some profound experiences of being more present in conversations and seeing the impact of what that unlocks for others. I’d recommend this course for any manager or leader who wants to lead teams that have different levels of capabilities and experience.”
“Many of my previous leaders had told me that to be a good manager I had to ‘give my team advice and tell them what to do’. During the course I realised that this approach wasn’t going to help me develop my team to be better problem solvers. As soon as I practiced the skills of being curious and asking better questions my team members noticed and started bringing me solutions to the challenges they faced rather than only bringing the challenges. To be honest, I was surprised at how quickly I saw a change in my team.”
“As part of our People and Culture team, I wanted to sharpen my ability to bring value to our strategic and coaching talks with the wider team. I also joined to evaluate how this program could benefit our managers as they build their people management and leadership skills. The program’s content, frameworks, skills, and materials were exactly what I was looking for. Amy has a great understanding and hands on experience with the material and explained it in a way that kept the cohort engaged. There was a great mix between active learning and discussions within the group. One of the key take-aways for me was the importance of staying curious and asking great questions before rushing too quickly into solution-mode. It’s been a simple but powerful reminder.”
