Are You Intentionally Building Your Career Trajectory?

career-path

In the busyness of work life, it’s easy to slip into reactive mode. Saying yes to whatever’s urgent, navigating shifting priorities, and moving forward without a clear sense of direction. But over time, that reactivity can steer your career off course. Sure you might be ticking off milestones, but are they your milestones?

What Is Experience Capital?

Experience Capital is the sum total of your professional value: your skills, your impact, your visibility as a leader. It’s not just about what’s on your résumé, but about how well-positioned you are for future opportunities. The more deliberately you invest in this capital, the more options you create for your next chapter.

The surprising stats are that most professionals (especially women) are not accumulating experience capital equally.

Recent insights from McKinsey’s 2024 Women in the Workplace report and the book The Broken Rung reveal that while men and women change roles at similar rates, men are significantly more likely to gain salary and seniority from those moves.

The difference? Strategic visibility and the accumulation of recognised experience capital.

The 2025 HBR article How Women Can Win in the Workplace adds depth to this, showing how systemic barriers and missed stretch opportunities can stall progression.

It’s not about working harder. It’s about investing in the right kinds of experiences that compound over time.

Your Environment Is Shaping You—Are You Paying Attention?

One of the strongest insights from high-performance research is this: your environment is always shaping your behaviour. Often, without you even realising it.

We saw this clearly during the pandemic. Habits, tools, and expectations shifted almost instantly.

The same thing happens in your professional environment. If you’re not consciously shaping it, you’ll find yourself adapting to everyone else’s agenda.

That’s where intentionality matters.

Intentional Growth vs. Accidental Progress

Most of us go through growth spurts followed by plateaus. It’s natural. What matters is what you do next.

High performers recognise the plateau early, and then act. They reflect on what’s working, where they want to go, and what they need to change. They focus on building the right skills, gaining visibility in the right rooms, and working on projects that stretch them in the right direction.

Harvard Business Review research backs this up: combining targeted skill-building with relationship development and strategic visibility significantly boosts career mobility. (HBR, 2025).

A Tool for Designing Your Growth

In my leadership programs and workshops, I use a simple but powerful framework: the Intentional Career Canvas. It helps leaders and teams:

  • Understand where they are now
  • Define where they want to go next
  • Uncover skill and visibility gaps
  • Identify practical stretch opportunities

Whether you’re ready to reorient your own career or you lead a team you want to support more effectively, this approach builds clarity, momentum, and purpose into the development process.

Ready to Lead Your Own Growth?

Experience Capital doesn’t build itself. It requires conscious choices:

  • What will you focus on?
  • What growth will you pursue?
  • What support will you seek?

If you’re ready to take control of your next professional chapter, there are two ways I can support you:
